Amanda Franklin - Quilt Love
In 1964, our family moved to Spain and I started first grade. Standard academic subjects included reading, writing, arithmetic, religion, English, and embroidery. By fifth grade, the year before we moved back to the US, I was being taught how to do pulled thread lace — and also how to play the castanets.
I started making my own clothes in tenth grade, and a couple of years later started my first quilt (never finished, thank goodness, due to more ambition than skill.) I started the second quilt maybe five years later (ditto), and finished one for the first time when I was in graduate school. I started making baby quilts in 1985 – sadly, that one was lost when Daniel’s mother moved.
The second one I finished is shown here: Laurie and Gregg’s wedding quilt, 1986. These pictures don’t show everything I’ve made. Some of the recipients have moved out of my life, and at least two baby quilts refuse to be found from where they are hiding in Deep Storage in the recipients’ mothers’ closets. I made several pieces to decorate our last house, but they got too faded to keep. But this gives you a general idea.
You can see the progression from the early ones, which were too ambitious and relied a lot on a degree of eyesight I no longer possess, to the ones now I can crank out as soon as I hear a baby is on the way. You can also see how much I love kaleidescopes for the way that, depending on how you hold them, the view is a changing mandala.
I’ve never started a quilt without knowing who it’s for. They are always made with specific love.
