Born and raised in Seattle, Helen Mallary is a Filipino-American watercolor illustrator. Her familial heritages have rooted her deep respect for nature which encourages her to repurpose materials in her practice including cutting out previous works to serve as a component for another piece.
For this collection, she has illustrated owls native to Washington State to invoke wonder for nature through a mode of picture book illustrations with watercolor and ink. Paying ode to Art Nouveau, she has drawn fonts, forms, and use of outlines from works of Alphonse Mucha and integrated them with layers cut outs and whimsical scenes. These scenes are intentionally to appear like ads from Mucha’s time period, but instead of advertising products, she lets nature and the owls come to the forefront.
